|Couple's On Mission Head to Beeville, Texas
Five couples traveled to Beeville, TX October 19 to serve at the South Texas Children’s Home Ministry, an affiliate of BGCT. None of us had ever been on the campus and were delighted with the quiet beauty of the 1,000 acre working ranch where we would be spending the next few days. In 1952, Laura Boothe Overby, a widow, started a Children’s Home and gave the ranch to the Home.
The men worked cutting out and painting signs for the kids 4-H projects. Their hardest job was scraping and painting the metal fencing around the show barn. They talked a lot about the aroma therapy they received at the barn that lingered in their nostrils for quite a while.
The Women cooked and froze thirty casseroles three for each of the 10 cottages. We made cookies for a social after Wednesday night prayer service and took a large platter of cookies to each cottage. No one had ever cooked for the House Moms before.
On Thursday night we took a full meal to the other STCHM campus, Marshall Ranch, which is 45 minutes away. We enjoyed our fellowship with this Mom and Pop and the girls in these two cottages.
Three cottages invited us to have dinner with them the first night we were there. So we divided into 3 small groups and enjoyed being able see the interaction between the kids and the Mom and Pop and realized what a wonderful family atmosphere exist. We went to serve, but came home fully blessed. We were so impressed with the genuine Christian love and discipline expressed by all the workers to the children.
